Today, I want to talk to you about getting the most out of your life, your business, and making it a success.
Now I recently reread a book by Gay Hendricks called The Big Leap.
In The Big Leap he talks about three specific things: he talks about your zone of incompetence, your zone of competence, and your zone of genius.
There’s that third thing that I want to talk to you about that I call the 5% rule.
For example, I run a business, I have many employees, I have many companies, and the fact of the matter is, if I decided to do the accounting for the companies, I would actually run them into the ground.
If I decided to buy toilet paper and write payroll paychecks, same thing. And I don’t even know how many paychecks we write each month or every two weeks.
I don’t know who gets paid what. What I do know is how to delegate, motivate, and sell. See, that is my zone of genius, and that’s what we’re gonna talk about…
Because when you operate in your zone of genius, money comes easy, success comes easy, lifestyle, freedom, and security all come easy because you’re doing what you are best at.
Now it doesn’t matter what kind of business you have. It doesn’t matter if you have a small business or a large business.
At the end of the day, your job as the entrepreneur, as the person where the buck stops with you, is to operate in your zone of genius, and that’s the 5% rule.
What that means is that you are going to only do the things that make you money, that give you freedom, and make you happy…
Now I know that as a business owner, both you and I have a lot of things to do.
They’re part of the business running, but cleaning the toilets doesn’t make you any money. You can outsource that to somebody for $10 or $12 an hour, and they can do that.
Doing your accounting or bookkeeping doesn’t make you any money, right?
It takes away valuable time that you could be spending doing the things that add greater value to your clients’ or customers’ lives, so look at it this way: when you sell, you make money.
When you market, you make money. When you get your existing clients and customers to refer their friends, family, and co-workers, you make more money. You add more value to those people’s lives.
Now you might be thinking, “Wait a minute, Bedros, so all this talk about money, is this what this post is all about?”
Yes, indeed it is, and if you have a hang up with money, that might be the reason you’re operating in your zone of incompetence.
See if you have this hang up with money, then you’re probably not allowing yourself to get past and to break through your limiting beliefs.
You’re probably operating at a place where you’re afraid to take money from someone in exchange for a service that adds 10, 20, or 100 times the value.
I’m willing to part with my dollars in exchange for that value. See money is just a vehicle to freedom, right?
It’s gonna get you to spend more time with your family. You’re gonna be able to take those longer vacations, and when you’re on those vacations, you’re not gonna sit and think about work.
There’s nothing worse than being at work and thinking about your family and how you miss them and how you regret not being with them, but then being at home and stressing and thinking about work, and what you need to do to make more money.
Think about this: your 5%, or your zone of genius, is where you need operate.
Now what I would ask you to do, to figure out what your 5% is, is to take a marker board or a piece of paper and write down everything that has to get done in a one month period, in your business, to move it forward.
Then what you’re gonna do is you’re gonna put an X next to all the things that fall in the trivial 95%. The things that can get done by somebody else who you can pay $20 or less per hour.
Think about that. Isn’t your time worth at least $20? Now, put an O next to all the things that are in your 5%. Now you’re gonna take those 5%, and you’re gonna move it on to a different sheet, and you’re gonna do the same thing over again.
See, I would never let anybody else deliver this message to you because I’m passionate about helping the small business owner, the big business owner, the coach, the consultant, and the personal trainer.
I would never allow anybody else to do this. However, just outside the doors of my office, there’s a team of people working on websites, doing accounting for us, ordering more products and services for my clients.
That’s what they do best, and it allows me to stay in my 5%, so that’s my challenge to you. You only live one life.
One, stop any bad association you have with money.
Number two, operate only in your zone of genius.
Number three, you might want to consider reading The Big Leap by Gay Hendricks. It’s an amazing book.
Every business owner I talk to tells me that there’s a ceiling, but they can’t seem to break through this thing and they always blame it on the economy, or they say that marketing has changed. Ever since Facebook has come around, newspaper and print ads don’t work.
At the end of the day, it’s your responsibility to find out what works to grow your business, and so you could either blame circumstances around you, or you can own it.
Take responsibility, only operate in your zone of genius, work in your 5%, and get the most out of your life and your business.
